According to campaign finance reports on file with the state Ethics Administration, Brown has authorized eight loans this year from himself and his primary business, Home Care PCA in Geismar.
“I'm a businessman who's running against a seasoned politician,” Brown said. “I knew it was going to be difficult to generate funds anyway.”
Brown led the primary field last month with 34 percent of the vote. Not far behind with 31 percent was state Rep. Elton M. Aubert of Vacherie.
Both men are Democrats hoping to walk away with a victory after the Nov. 19 election.
Senate District 2 is an open seat. It's also a new district, drafted during the recent redistricting session to create an opportunity for minority candidates to win.
The newly-drawn district includes west Thibodaux and parts of Assumption, St. James, St. John the Baptist, St. Charles, Ascension and West Baton Rouge parishes.
When it comes to money in the bank, the two men are evenly matched: Aubert's cash on hand is roughly $44,800, while Brown has about $44,000.
However, Brown has only independently raised about $2,640 from three sources, including Louisiana Association of Educators, Baton Rouge, $1,500; William R. Burke III, Baton Rouge, $1,000; and 1st Priority Real Estate, Napoleonville, $140.
“That's starting to change, though. I came out of the primary as the frontrunner, and a lot of people took notice,” Brown said. “Next week, I'll be having some sizable fundraisers in Donaldsonville and Thibodaux.”
He said the only reason he accepted money from the Louisiana Association of Educators' political action committee is because he “believes in their philosophy.”
Brown has already spent about two-thirds of his own investment, or $106,000, records show.
On election day last month, he spent $50,000 alone on canvassers, paying 387 primary workers an average of $129 each.
