She sent her resume to a man who called himself Robert Richard. Richard said he was relocating to Wichita Falls with his elderly grandfather from Salem, Ore., and Arrieta would need to come sit with him five days per week for about four hours.
Richard promised to send a check in advance for the first week. But in an email Richard said the check accidentally had been sent in the wrong amount.
The certified check, which Arrieta signed for, was for $2,950 instead of $500. Upon cashing the check, Arrieta was instructed to keep the $500 promised to her along with an additional $50 if she would return the remaining amount through Moneygram to a rental agent named Ray Grimes in Hillsboro, Ala.
By that time, Arrieta knew something was wrong. Not only did it sound suspicious, but Richard had referred to his grandfather as "her" in one email, and when Arrieta questioned him, she got no response.
The check was addressed to Arrieta, but it was from Citizens Bank in State College, Pa. — nowhere near Oregon or Wichita Falls.
Additionally, there wasn't an individual's name on the check, but a business called Associated Realty Property Management, Inc., also in Sate College, Pa.
Increasingly suspicious of the job and check, Arrieta emailed Richard she believed it was a scam and wanted no part of it or the job.
