Credit unions holding 'Bank Transfer Day' on Saturday

Salisbury-based Lion’s Share Federal Credit Union will be open from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday as part of “Bank Transfer Day.”

The credit union, which serves employees and family members of Food Lion and the Delhaize America Group, notes that new checking account openings have risen in October.

Consumers have responded to fees large banks had tried to put in place. Campaigns on Facebook led some to move deposits to community-based financial institutions. The consumer shift has many credit unions changing their operating hours and ramping up efforts to draw in customers.

“No one can remember new account activity and consumer interest at this level,” said N.C. Credit Union League President/CEO John Radebaugh. “And credit unions are ready, willing and able to meet the needs of consumers.”

Charlotte Metro FCU’s new account openings online were 350 percent higher than normal, with in-branch account openings nearly double the normal pace. Coastal FCU in Raleigh reports similar numbers of new accounts.

Other credit unions ramped up marketing and advertising efforts, highlighting online “switch kits” that make it easier for consumers to move their money.

“If consumers are angry at big banks,” Radebaugh said, “we invite them to look at credit unions. We think they’ll like what they see.”

As not-for-profit cooperative financial institutions, credit unions return earnings to members in the form of higher deposit rates, lower loan rates and lower fees. Economists at the Credit Union National Association estimate that state credit unions saved members a combined $170 million in the past year compared to what they would have paid at a banking institution.

The North Carolina Credit Union League is a trade association for 95 state credit unions. More than 3 million people in North Carolina are members of a credit union.Visit www.asmarterchoice.org for more information.

College Basketball: Livingstone 80, Pfeiffer 69 | Salisbury, NC ...

SALISBURY — James Stinson has had about a month to evaluate the Livingstone men’s basketball team — and so far he likes what he sees.

“I like the team camaraderie and the way we’re playing,” LC’s seventh-year head coach said Saturday at Trent Gym. “They’re all willing to make sacrifices. We have some people that can score the ball, but they’re making sacrifices for the sake of the team.”

Paced by tourney-MVP Nasir Austin’s 22 points, the Blue Bears (2-0) downed Pfeiffer 80-69 in the third annual Highway 52 Shootout championship game.

“It’s a big deal to me,” senior Greg Henry said after being named to the all-tournament team. “It’s the first time we’ve ever won it and it sets us up for bigger goals down the road.”

Livingstone hopes to build on last season, when it went 17-12 and advanced to the CIAA title game. Pfeiffer (1-1) — smaller and less experienced — put up a good fight before unraveling in the last four minutes.

“It’s definitely a tough one to walk away from,” guard Danny Smith said after netting a team-high 22 points for the Falcons. “We’re gonna take this loss and try to learn from it.”

Pfeiffer jumped to a 13-6 lead when Elija Matthews drained a 3-pointer from the left side six minutes into the match.

“We were executing our game plan,” losing coach Jeremy Currier said after PU shot 42 percent from the floor, including 8-for-20 from downtown. “But they’ve got a lot of talent over there. They’re a heck of a team.”

Livingstone regrouped from a ragged start and took its first lead with six minutes remaining in the half. Mark Thomas, one of five LC scorers in double figures, knocked down a 3-ball and provided a 28-26 edge. The Blue Bears later used a reckless 18-8 run to take a 44-34 halftime lead.
