Military exercises to begin on Friday

The nation will start its annual series of military exercises on Friday and they will last until June, the Ministry of National Defense announced yesterday.

The ministry said that Wan-an Drill No. 35 would seek to improve national security through war-game simulations, integrated maneuvering exercises and civil air defense exercises.

Noting that natural disaster prevention and relief have become one of the major missions of the military, All-Out Defense Mobilization Division Director Tsai Chung-cheng (蔡忠誠) said this year’s drill would be combined with the Executive Yuan’s disaster prevention drills, which will be organized by local governments.

The exercises will test the nation’s ability in the areas of mobilization, civil defense, emergency medical care, disaster prevention and rescue, villager evacuation and providing shelter, and other contingency measures, such as infectious disease prevention, as well as boosting cooperation between the military and local governments.

Tsai said war-game simulations would take place between Friday and May 22 and they would target eight types of disaster in line with the potential threats to various parts of the country.

“We have planned for eight types of disaster — typhoons, landslides, floods, earthquakes, nuclear accidents, tsunamis, and air and sea accidents. We have asked each local government to set up two major disaster scenarios,” Tsai said, adding that Keelung would begin the drills on Friday.

“Integrated maneuver exercises” will be held in the afternoon in 11 cities and counties, with “local governments responsible for disaster relief, while the military provides support,” Tsai said.

Believe Army mobilizes in fight against ALS - St. Thomas Times ...

ROBERT CHAULK Bob Barber, left, his seven-month grandson Jax McTaggart, his son Steve Barber and daughter Meg McTaggart, all wear Believe Army apparel to fight Lough Gehrig's disease. The Drew Doughty Los Angeles King's autographed hockey shirt in the background is being raffled off during the St. Thomas Stars final regular season home game Feb. 26 at the Timken Centre. See story, page 5.

Wherever you find a major soccer game this season, chances are you'll find the Believe Army at the same location.

The Believe Army are the dedicated volunteers that come out to support the challenge to find a cure for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. They'll be recognizable by a special tent they'll be using and an impressive array of Believe Army gear.

The Believe Army also supports Steve Barber, who at 25, was diagnosed with ALS in 2004.

The Army was originally known as the B-Leaf team, a play on word which reflected Steve's loyalty to both the Toronto Maple Leafs and Boston Bruins.

"It just turned into Team Believe and now it's the Believe Army," said Lindsay Disbrowe, Steve's fiancee. "Steve's really got involved with the branding of the charity, so he's changed things up in the last couple of years, and made it more the army, of people who have been fighting ALS."

The Believe Army starts a new chapter this spring, now affiliated with the St. Thomas Soccer Club.

"We have six tournaments we're going to be at this year," Disbrowe said.

"We also do baseball tournaments and we also are going to be at the Stars' final home game against London raffling off a jersey. So we pretty much have something once or twice a month to try to do a fundraiser.

"We actually met with the St. Thomas Soccer Club and they said the Believe Army will be their charity this year. We're going to be set up at their Meet the Coaches day and we're going to be sponsoring a team ourselves."

"As well, we'll be at all the tournaments, selling Believe Army gear and raising awareness and trying to raise some funds for ALS.
