Salvation Army kicks off holiday kettle campaign
The peal of Salvation Army bells returns to Columbia tomorrow, giving local shoppers at 19 retail locations a chance to put their Christmas season donations into the familiar red kettles.
The Salvation Army kicked off its Red Kettle Campaign yesterday at halftime of the Missouri-Texas football game, announcing the 2011 fundraising goal of $341,000. The total is an increase from last year’s goal of $334,000, which was met.
“The increase represents an increase in need,” said Maj. Kendall Mathews, regional coordinator of the Columbia/Jefferson City Salvation Army. “The need is up.”
The Salvation Army’s Harbor House shelter has been near or at capacity for eight weeks with women and children, as well as veterans, becoming more frequent guests, Mathews said. Capacity at Harbor House is 61, with an additional 15 cots dedicated for use in extreme weather. He also is seeing a steadily increasing need for mental health services.
The new trend of more women and children staying at the shelter has pushed the number of children there to an even dozen — a record for the local shelter, Mathews said. The shelter also wants to be in a position to serve “as many veterans as possible,” he said.
“At the shelter, everyday is Veterans Day for us,” Mathews said.
The Red Kettle Campaign raises funds that provide food, clothing, shelter and other services throughout the year. The number of red kettle locations will increase from 19 to 27 on Nov. 25, the day after Thanksgiving.
One of the more visible examples of the Salvation Army’s services and year-round fundraising are the thrift stores at 1304 Parkade Blvd. and 23 E. Walnut St. A steady stream of shoppers browsed and bought items yesterday at the Walnut Street location as Mathews greeted customers.
