Green Wave volleyball team falls in regional
Unforced errors and a struggling offense prevented the Newark Catholic High School girls volleyball team from playing for a state tournament berth.
The Green Wave lost to Beaver Eastern 15-25, 25-15, 25-16, 21-25, 15-11 in a Division IV regional semifinal Nov. 3 at Lancaster.
Beaver Eastern played Reedsville Eastern in a regional final Nov. 5.
Newark Catholic had not advanced to a regional since 2008, when it won its second regional title in a row. The Green Wave lost in a state semifinal in 2007 and 2008, was state runner-up in 2005 and last won a state championship in 2004.
“It was great being back in the regional after missing it two years in a row,” said coach Jeri Helfer, whose team finished 18-9. “I hope we can build on this because we need to get our tradition back. We need to get the crowd back, get them back on the bandwagon. We need to expect to be here, so maybe we broke the ice this year.”
The fifth game was tied at 2 before Beaver Eastern used four kills from Rhyanna Day and two unforced errors by Newark Catholic to take a 9-4 lead. But kills from Jayla Graves and Courtney McCracken helped the Green Wave pull within 10-9, as Beaver Eastern was called for foot violations on two consecutive points.
The Eagles led 11-10 when Chandler Brown’s block gave Beaver Eastern the momentum to score four of the final five points in the match.
“We played roller coaster, like we did quite a bit this year,” Helfer said. “We need to play more consistently. É You can’t run a strong offense when you can’t pass or receive well. We played defense most of the night.”
Newark Catholic started strong, scoring 16 of the final 23 points in the opening game after leading 9-8. But the Eagles reversed the score in the second game and took a 14-6 lead in the third game. Although Newark Catholic pulled within 14-13, it couldn’t overcome that deficit.
